Remembering “Chevy” Hill: Advocacy at the Intersection of Black and Trans Identities

The tragic murder of Righteous Torrence "Chevy" Hill, makes him the third trans individual to be violently murdered this year, underscoring the persistent and urgent crisis facing the transgender and gender-expansive community. Chevy's death has, lamentably, not garnered the same level of public attention as that of Nex Benedict, highlighting a racial and age disparity in the visibility and advocacy for victims of anti-trans violence. While it is predominantly Black and brown trans women who bear the brunt of this violence, Chevy's murder serves as a harrowing reminder of the intersecting vulnerabilities faced by those who navigate the world at the nexus of Black, trans, and masc identities. His ambitious work to cultivate a queer-friendly barbershop culture stands as a testament to his commitment to inclusivity and safety for queer and trans individuals, illuminating the path toward a more accepting and equitable future.

Hill's Vision and the Urgency of Intersectional Allyship

Chevy Hill's pioneering effort to reimagine barbershop culture as inclusive and welcoming for the queer community was more than a professional endeavor; it was a bold statement against the heteronormative and often sexist and exclusionary traditions of such spaces. Through his work, Chevy not only sought to provide a safe haven for queer and trans people but also to challenge and expand the societal norms surrounding masculinity and identity. This mission is a critical reminder of the ongoing need for spaces where all individuals, irrespective of their gender identity or sexual orientation, can find acceptance and support.

The intersection of Black, queer, and trans identities is fraught with compounded challenges, including heightened risks of violence, discrimination, and systemic injustice. Chevy's life and work underscore the critical need for advocacy and support that specifically addresses these overlapping vulnerabilities.

Amplifying the Call for Policy Change

In response to the continuous violence against the trans community, the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) has been at the forefront of advocating for comprehensive policy changes to protect and uplift Black transgender individuals. The NBJC's call to action emphasizes the necessity of legislative and societal reforms that confront the root causes of anti-trans violence and discrimination. This includes pushing for laws that ensure equal rights and protections, advocating for the demilitarization of police forces, and demanding greater accountability for acts of violence against transgender people.

Active Allyship Opportunities

1. Educate and Raise Awareness: Understanding the complexities of Black trans experiences is the first step in becoming an effective ally. Sharing knowledge and raising awareness about these issues can help shift public perception and combat stigma.

2. Support Inclusive Initiatives: Following Chevy Hill's example, we can all contribute by supporting businesses and initiatives that prioritize inclusivity and safety for queer and trans individuals. This not only honors Chevy's legacy but also reinforces the importance of such spaces in our communities.

3. Advocate Alongside the NBJC: Join the NBJC in its advocacy for policy change. This can involve contacting legislators, participating in advocacy campaigns, and lending your voice to calls for justice and equality for the Black trans community.

4. Contribute to Organizations like SnapCo: Financial support for organizations that work tirelessly to protect and support Black and LGBTQ+ individuals is crucial. Donating to Solutions Not Punishment Collaborative (SnapCo) is a direct way to contribute to the safety and well-being of Black trans people.

5. Sign The SnapCo Pledge: Show your commitment by signing the SnapCo pledge to protect Black and trans people. This is a simple yet powerful way to stand in solidarity with those at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities.

The loss of Righteous Torrence "Chevy" Hill is a profound tragedy that highlights the urgent need for action to protect Black, queer, and trans lives. Chevy's vision for a more inclusive world, alongside the NBJC's call for policy change, provides a roadmap for how we can honor his legacy through active allyship. By educating ourselves, supporting inclusive spaces, advocating for legislative change, contributing to organizations fighting for this cause, and standing in solidarity with the Black trans community, we can make strides toward a future where everyone is valued and protected. Let's commit to being part of the solution, in memory of Chevy and all those who have suffered from violence due to their identity.
